PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Several elected leaders in Oregon declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for downtown Portland over the public health and public safety crisis fueled by fentanyl. The declaration is a recommendation from a governor-established task force that met for several months last year to determine ways to rejuvenate downtown Portland. The effort also extends the Portland Police Bureau’s partnership with Oregon State Police to jointly patrol downtown streets for fentanyl sales. At the state level, Oregon lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would undo a key part of the state’s drug decriminalization law. Public opinion has soured on it as public drug use has become more visible because of growing homelessness.

Burt Bacharach, legendary composer of pop songs, dies at 94

Bacharach was both an innovator and throwback, and his career seemed to run parallel to the rock era. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, a prize-winning Broadway composer for "Promises, Promises" and a three-time Oscar winner. Fellow songwriter Sammy Cahn liked to joke that the smiling, wavy-haired Bacharach was the first composer he ever knew who didn't look like a dentist. Bacharach was essentially a pop composer, but his songs became hits for country artists (Marty Robbins), rhythm and blues performers (Chuck Jackson), soul (Franklin, Luther Vandross) and synth-pop (Naked Eyes). He's everybody's composer ... Burt Bacharach!"
CNN —“Amsterdam” certainly doesn’t suffer from a lack of ambition, and the star-studded cast merely adds to that sense of grandeur. Burt (Christian Bale), a part-Jewish Park Avenue doctor whose in-laws disapprove of him, and Harold (John David Washington) bonded while serving together during World War I, where they met up with a free-spirited nurse, Valerie (Margot Robbie) who fell for Harold, forging a seemingly inseparable trio. Recovering from their war injuries, they took refuge in Amsterdam, a place where the world’s concerns – including those involving race – appeared to shrink away. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington in 'Amsterdam.' “This is so strange,” Burt mutters at one point, which turns out to be an inadvertent commentary on the film itself.
LOS ANGELES, Oct 5 (Reuters) - In the new movie "Amsterdam," Christian Bale, John David Washington and Margot Robbie play friends who are reunited years later and accused of murder. The film from Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell, which debuts in theaters on Friday, is inspired by the real-life story of a little-known plot to overthrow U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s. Bale and Washington play wounded World War One soldiers who celebrated their postwar life in Amsterdam with their nurse, played by Margot Robbie. Director David O. De Niro said he believed the film had resonance with the current U.S. political climate.

Uber Eats is announcing expanded consumer goods and convenience offerings in its Super Bowl ad. The ad marks a partnership with Goop and the launch of new retail hubs on the Uber Eats app. "Nearly three million consumers order essentials beyond food each month through Uber Eats," the company wrote in a blog post earlier this week. In tandem with the Super Bowl ad, Uber Eats is also launching themed retail hubs for the Super Bowl and Valentine's Day that feature curated items available for delivery through the app. This will be the second Super Bowl ad for UberEats, following a 2021 spot starring actors Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as their popular "Wayne's World" characters.
